What is a Muffler?

Of course, if you are checking out our website, it is obvious that you are already familiar with mufflers. Before we venture on muffler repairs, we like to cover all the bases, so here is a brief course of Muffler 101.

A muffler is a mechanical device intended to lessen the noise produced by a machine. In British English, it is called the silencer.

Mufflers are generally set up along with the exhaust pipe. These two are parts of the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine of an automobile in order to minimize the noise coming from the exhaust. Mufflers lessen the noise through a resonating chamber that is particularly adjusted to generate destructive interference. When we say destructive interference, it means that contrary sound waves rescind one another.

Aside from mufflers on internal combustion engine, catalytic converters also function with a silencing effect. The difference between the two is that mufflers cancel sound waves while catalytic converters accomplish it through restraint.
